NOUMENON – PHENOMENON

Noumenon is the unmanifested aspect of what we,sentient beings, are.

Phenomenon is our manifestation.

Therefore, manifested, we must suffer pain and pleasure; unmanifested, we cannot experience either. Both aspects are permanent  and coeval, the one subject to time  (which accompanies  all manifestation,  rendering the extension of events perceptible), the other— timeless.

Noumenon—timeless, spaceless, imperceptible being — is what we are.

Phenomena—temporal, finite, sensorially perceptible—are what we  appear to be as separate objects.

Phenomena, subject to time, are impermanent, illusory figments   in consciousness, but they are nothing but noumenon in manifestation, in a dream context (one of several dream contexts— psychic conditions   due to sleep, drugs, asphyxiation, etc.).

Similarly noumenon is nothing; factually, demonstrably, cognisably  (and therefore objectively) is nothing, that is, no thing,  but—apart from—its manifestation as phenomena.

That is the meaning of the ‘mysterious’ contradictions enunciated by the Sages:

‘Form is nothing but void, void is nothing but form’,

‘Samsara is Nirvana, Nirvana is Samsara’,

‘Phenomena and Noumenon are one’, etc., etc.

Phenomenon – (hiện tượng) – là những gì có thể nhận biết được qua ngũ quan: nếm, nhìn, nghe, ngửi và sờ thấy .. v.. v…

Noumenon – (???) – “cái” mà tự nó hiện hữu ( a thing-in-itself ) , không cần dựa vào sự nhận thức gì của ai hết . Ta chỉ biết là “nó ” có vậy thôi. Ngoài ra thì không có cách nào diễn tả cho chính xác về nó được . (Trong những phần tiếp theo đây sẽ dùng tạm danh từ “siêu hiện tượng” hay “hượng tiện” để ám chỉ noumenon .)
“Hiện tượng” và “Hượng tiện” luôn đi đôi , luôn dính liền với nhau .

“Hiện tượng” là bề ngoài của cái “siêu hiện tượng”, là cái phần của “hượng tiện” mà ta có thể cảm nhận ra .

Chẳng những thế Wei Wu Wei còn cho rằng các sinh linh như chúng ta thực sự vốn là “hượng tiện” , vốn là “no-thing” . Nhưng từ “no-thing” này lại có thể xuất hiện tất cả mọi hình bóng, mọi thể chất dính chìm trong không gian và thời gian . Tất cả đều có thể xuất hiện, và tất cả đều có thể tiêu tan …
